A high-performance HF signal generator was designed by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) as part of the test equipment for a specialized HF receiver. The generator is capable of producing up to 250 different signals in any 1 MHz band within the 3 to 30 MHz HF band. The transmitted signal or signals are truly arbitrary, produced at an IF range of 0.5 to 1.5 MHz, with a DAC update rate of 5 million samples per second.

Custom software was also developed to facilitate signal creation within certain parameters. Each signal had unique

  • Turn-on and turn-off times

  • Power levels

  • Baud rates

  • Modulation schemes including

    • OOK (Morse coded)

    • FSK

    • PSK-4 and 8

    • QAM-16 and 64

The system achieved 75 dB SFDR, with a THD of 70 dB and a noise floor of 85 dB below full power.
