The U.S. government contracted with Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) to design, develop, and produce a functional replacement of the IP-1309/APY-1 Digital Data Control-Monitor (DDC-M). The DDC-M interfaces with and allows functional testing of the AN/APY-1 and AN/APY-2 radar systems on U.S. Air Force (USAF) Series E-3A, E-3B, and E-3C Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) aircraft.
The main objective of the program was to produce a functional replacement of the current DDC-M that was:
Because the replacement DDC-M was intended to require no user retraining, it provided the same type of user interface as the previous DDC-M. After successful functional, environmental, and AWACS flight testing, SwRI delivered a final prototype to the U.S. Government. In addition, SwRI provided technical manual documentation and a validated procurement drawing package in accordance with MIL-T-31000.
After delivery of the first DDC-M, the U.S. government contracted with SwRI to build an additional 50 units, develop provisioning documentation, and provide maintenance.
