Duration:     Twelve Months

Rapid advances in small engine technology have produced a wide assortment of new engine designs. Manufacturers of products using these engines must evaluate performance, reliability, durability, and cost of competing engines. As an independent research facility, Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is able to provide unbiased engine evaluations.

Four-Cycle Engine Undergoing Tilt Testing

SwRI has completed a program funded by a product manufacturer to evaluate six basic engine models. These models represent both domestic and imported engine technology. Both 2-stroke and 4-stroke cycle engines ranging from 2 to 4 horsepower were evaluated for performance, durability, startability at various temperatures, oil consumption, and ability to perform at different tilt angles and directions. Additional testing was done on gasoline and alcohol fuel blends.
