Project Brief
Chevrolet 454 Cylinder Head Evaluation

Cylinder Heads Prior to DisassemblyReference:  03-2609-009

Client:         Commercial
                   Confidential

Duration:     One-Week

Engines operating on gaseous fuels such as natural gas and propane often experience rapid valve recession. Even when special hardened materials are used for valve faces and valve seat inserts, severe valve and seat wear can occur.

A Representative Exhaust ValveSouthwest Research Institute (SwRI) was asked by a commercial client to examine the cylinder heads taken from a natural gas-fueled 60-kW cogeneration set engine that had accumulated 15,000 hours of operation. The client requested an evaluation of the condition of the cylinder heads compared to the number of hours of service, and an estimated rebuild cost for placement back into service.
